SA loses R1bn in agricultural exports due to strike

Are SMMEs Getting Adequate Support?

80 percent of SMMEs surveyed answered no to this question. Nicholas Biekpe, the president of Africa Growth Institute said that these SMMEs felt that banks and the government were not doing enough to support them. He also added that they have cited key factors affecting them to be employee costs, high operating costs, high taxes and lack of access to finance.  The survey was released by Africagrowth and based on responses drawn from 133 SMMEs out of 1432.( which is 9.29 percent of the SMMEs) They were surveyed as part of a study sponsored by the Industrial Development Corporation in conjunction with WK Kellogg Foundation during the second quarter.

It reveals that confidence in the industrial sector fell to 31.33 percent in the second quarter from 36.87 percent in the first quarter; the services sub-sector dropped to 41.69 percent from 42.92 percent.
An average of all the indices shows a decrease of 0.79 percentage points to 40.23 percent.
